Community Engagement And Involvement At Its Best

Great Yarmouth People (GYP), our local Community Empowerment Network, CEN a partnership of community, voluntary, faith and statutory sector, with Community Connections as the responsible body held a spectacular event on Saturday 15th March at the Marina Centre.

This event was called Great Yarmouth Together (GY Together) and that is exactly what it was on the day, as hundreds of people from the community turned out to take part in the event that included the history and future of Great Yarmouth a talent contest and fabulous raffle prizes generously donated by businesses. A number of services, projects and groups were present to promote their work and enabling the community to access a range of information. This was a record turn out of the community and the first event in Great Yarmouth that brought together so many talented people giving a showcase of high quality acts of singing and dancing from a range of age groups. Every act was a winner on the day.

The four judges, Tony Wright MP, Jane Ratcliffe,- Chair of the Local Strategic Partnership Executive, Marie Hartley, Culture, Sport and Leisure Manager and Ann Edwards - Newspaper editor took on the challenge and after a difficult decision the following acts for each age category etc took the first, second and third place:

50 and Over - 1st Kenny Nichols, 2nd Michael Lewis
30 - 50 - 1st Eileen Mascoll, 2nd Georgina Stringer
16 - 30 - 1st EFX, 2nd Laura Smith, 3rd Anna Ross
Under 16's - 1st Skye Brewer, 2nd Starburst, 3rd Chantell Morton

kidsOverall Winner - EFX
A cash prize of £200 was kindly donated to the winners of this contest by Acteon.
“We had anticipated good attendance from the community and great performances and are very pleased with the quantity, quality and enthusiasm on the night. It was all that we could have hoped for and more. A lot of commitment and dedication went into the planning, facilitation, marketing and promotion of the event and the end results proved how important community engagement and involvement are and further demonstrated that Great Yarmouth has Talent. We are so impressed with the contestants who took part that we would like to organise a talent show again and get some talent spotters to attend to give the acts a chance to hopefully be discovered for future development.” Trish Aydin - Chief Executive Community Connections and Officer Great Yarmouth People.
